Command and Staff College, Defence Academy, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, 17 February 2025 – 07 March 2025 – Officers from the 15th Command and Staff Course (CSC-15) have successfully completed the first level of the IS5101 International Security Studies (ISS) module, marking a significant milestone in their professional development. Conducted from 17 February to 7 March 2025, the intensive three-week programme was led by the distinguished Professor Aries Arugay, a visiting professor from the University of the Philippines.
The module provided critical insights into global security dynamics, equipping participants with the intellectual tools to analyse and respond to evolving threats. Over 10 syndicated discussions and 10 in depth lectures, they explored key topics including:
• International Relations Theories – Frameworks shaping global power dynamics.
• Peacekeeping & Human Security – The military’s role in stabilisation and humanitarian efforts.
• Hybrid Warfare & Maritime Security – Addressing unconventional threats and safeguarding
strategic sea lanes.
• The UN & Revisionist States – Understanding institutional roles and global power shifts.
• Global South Perspectives – Integrating diverse security viewpoints.
In today’s complex security environment, geopolitical awareness is crucial at the highest levels of military leadership. Strategic decisions on defence policy, force modernisation, and operational planning are shaped by global power dynamics. Understanding these shifts is essential for safeguarding national interests, ensuring military readiness, and adapting to emerging challenges. Professor Aries’s expertise and thought-provoking lectures challenged participants to think beyond conventional military paradigms, fostering a holistic and forward-thinking approach to security. His insights sharpened their analytical skills, preparing them not only as commanders but as strategic thinkers who can influence policy and shape the future of their armed forces. With this strong foundation, CSC-15 officers are now better equipped to make informed decisions, craft resilient security strategies, and lead with a global perspective in an ever-evolving geopolitical landscape.
